Mount Kosciuszko – Main Range Loop

Summiting Mount Kosciuszko involves a hike through the Thredbo-Perisher area of Kosciuszko National Park, within the Snowy Mountains region of New South Wales. Rather than starting out at 9:00am as the chairlift opens at Thredbo, I opted to begin and end at Charlotte’s Pass earlier in the day. Pockets of ice along the way made this a refreshing 22.4 km summer day hike.

LENGTH

22.4 km from Charlotte’s Pass, about 6 hours

DISTANCE TO CAPITAL CITIES

5.5 hours drive south-west of Sydney (500 km)
14.5 hours drive south-west of Brisbane (1400 km)
7.5 hours drive north-east of Melbourne (565 km)

CAMPSITES

It is possible to make this an overnight hike, with wilderness camping permitted anywhere except: within 30 m of riveres/lakes within 200 m of roads, track heads, the chairlift walkway, and where the Main Range walk crosses the Snowy River at Foremans Crossing (below Charlotte’s Pass).
